David Tazzyman is the bestselling illustrator of the Mr Gum books (Egmont) which have won a multitude of awards, including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. David grew up in Leicester, and studied illustration at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has also illustrated the picture books You Can’t Take an Elephant on the Bus and The Truth According to Arthur for Bloomsbury. He lives in Leicestershire with his partner and their three children.
A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month January 2021 | There’s lots of laughs here! An elephant on a bus, a whale on a bike, a hippo in a hot air balloon – none of these is a good idea as soon becomes clear in the attractive and bouncy rhyme of this witty picture book. The catastrophes that lie in store in each case such as the bus toppling over when nudged by the elephant, the enormous whale teetering on a tiny bike and hippo on a collision course with a chimney pot are wittily illustrated by David Tazzyman, much loved for his illustrations for Andy Stanton’s delightfully disgusting Mr Gum.
Of course you shouldn’t call an elephant in an emergency, he’ll just tangle the fire hoses and cause a flood. Don’t let lemmings fly the rescue helicopter either, or rely on an anteater for a cave rescue (he’ll disgrace himself). These are just some of the ridiculous scenarios dreamed up by Patricia Cleveland-Peck in the latest in this hilarious picture book series, illustrations by David Tazzyman, his scribbly detail catching all the chaos and possibilities of the action. It’s great to read aloud and the action builds to a perfect, and perfectly funny conclusion. Peck and Tazzyman are the consummate picture book partnerships and each double-page is an brilliant adventure in its own right.
April 2019 Book of the Month | The Naughty Naughty Baddies are deliciously, outrageously, phenomenally BAD and their antics in this new adventure will thrill young readers. Their attention is caught by a competition poster: prove that alien life exists and receive a toy-tastic reward from the president. Who could resist? Baddie Four comes up with a fiendishly naughty and brilliantly bonkers plan and – for a while at least – they manage to bamboozle the president before being found out. They still have the last laugh though, and children too will be in stitches. The story is great fun and illustrator David Tazzyman reaches new heights of gleefully wild, energetic and scribbly chaos.
The Naughty Naughty Baddies are wickedly wicked, awfully awful and diabolically dreadful, and they have just come up with a mischievous plan to blast off to the moon and to stitch up the President. But will our fiendish fraudsters come undone? Aliens, badmobiles, rockets . . . Mwa-ha-ha! Be part of the intergalactic impishness in this astronomically funny adventure. It's out of this world! With illustrations by the bestselling illustrator of You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus - over 150,000 copies sold in the UK.
Shortlisted for the CLPE Children’s Poetry Award (CLiPPA) 2017 A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month September 2018 | | Michael Rosen is the bestselling author of We're Going on a Bear Hunt, along with many other picture books and collections of poetry. Packed with silly rhymes, witty wordplay and thought-provoking story poems, this new collection of poems will delight children of all ages.
There’s all sorts of useful advice in this picture book. Not only should you not let an elephant drive a digger, it isn’t advisable either to let a polar bear cut your hair, or a seal prepare your meal; and you should never go to the loo with a kangaroo. In fact, it concludes, it’s far more sensible to forget about letting the various animals help and just play with them instead. Each zany situation will have children laughing out loud and they’ll soon be joining in with the lively rhyming text. David Tazzyman’s illustrations inject an extra layer of wild excitement and anarchy, and this deserves to become a huge favourite with readers.
A larger than life collection of poems for a middle grade audience about one wild, hysterical and hilarious Mum. Lovereading Review will follow.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a more dastardly set of villains than the naughty, naughty baddies and the criminal plan they hatch is outrageously wicked and daring! They actually break into the queen’s palace to steal the spots off her little dog Woof-Woof. In a wonderful twist they are caught out by their evil laugh, though they all escape to commit more crimes another day. Children will squeal with delight at the sheer naughtiness of this book (particularly the picture of the king reading the newspaper in the loo), and in David Tazzyman’s brilliant drawings the four baddies fizz with a gleeful, chaotic boldness. Bad behaviour has never been so appealing! ~ Andrea Reece
Shortlisted for the CLPE Children’s Poetry Award (CLiPPA) 2017 Packed with silly rhymes, witty wordplay and thought-provoking story poems, this new collection of poems will delight children of all ages.
Arthur has a problem with The Truth, though normally they’re good friends. You see Arthur has done something he shouldn’t have, and rather than come clean about it, he tries to bend, to stretch, cover up and finally just ignore the truth. The Truth, as envisaged by David Tazzyman, is a grey splodge that even when being stretched or bent seems imbued with the unmovable, rigid qualities of stone, a representation that feels just right. This clever picture book fable makes clear the appeal and temptations of fibbing, and the relief that comes from telling the truth. A funny and clever picture book with a message that all children will understand. ~ Andrea Reece
The Austen of audacity, Armitage Shanks, circus master and dastardliest of villains is back and up to no good, to the delight of fans of these wacky, inventive and hugely entertaining books. And indeed, readers are promised (warned?) that this book will be the Shankiest ever written, for there’s not one Shanks centre stage, but two – Armitage we learn has an identically horrible twin, Zachary Shanks. The real hero of the books is of course the thoroughly nice young Billy and it’s more than likely that not only will he be able to see off even two Shanks, but that the effort will be very well worth reading about. Few writers match the frenetic humour and anarchic wit of these stories - they give even Mr Gum a run for his money. Free-wheeling fun! ~ Andrea Reece
