June 2022 Book of the Month | This is adventure number six for the Bolds, a family of hyenas living happily in Teddington disguised as humans. Let’s hope there will be more too, because there are very few stories more joyful, cheering and entertaining than these and only Paddington to compare for characters as lovable and inspirational. If you’ve read previous Bolds books, you’ll know that they’re always ready to help other animals and to open their doors to those in need. Of course therefore they give homeless aardvark Annika a warm welcome and set out to track down her missing friends, escapees from the same zoo, Charlie the skunk and Fergie the fruit bat. The latter, we discover, have been camping out in Parliament Square with friendly eco-warriors. Can the Bolds find them somewhere permanent (and quieter) to live? This is the Bolds, so of course the answer is yes. Gloriously silly, genuinely heart-warming and beautifully plotted, it all ends with a special party for twins Betty and Bobby Bold, and an ‘au revoir’ to another friend, Fifi, the singing poodle superstar. She promises to return, ‘Wherever life might take me, my heart belongs with the Bolds.’ That will be true for all the dear readers too, this one included.
Touching on major moments in the story of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights including the Stonewall Uprising, the first Gay Pride Rally and the dazzling history of drag and the ballroom scene, We Are Your Children is a wide-ranging and inclusive account of a multifaceted movement, with detailed and characterful colour artwork. This book showcases figures from queer history like Harvey Milk, Julian Hows, Carla Toney, Crystal LaBeija, We Wha, Vincent Jones, Marsha P. Johnson, Alan Turing, Sylvia Rivera and many more. From the secret slang adopted by gay Londoners the 60s, to the decades of sit-ins and marches, there are countless fascinating stories to be told: stories of resistance, friendship, love, fear, division, unity and astonishing perseverance in the face of discrimination and oppression.
This text has been set in Dyslexie, a typeface specially designed for people with dyslexia | This latest addition to the innovative The Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts is a wonderful story that’s sure to inspire young readers who are trying to find their voice and express themselves, especially dyslexic children for whom reading and spelling might be a struggle. The eponymous Aaron Slater Illustrator of this beautiful rhyming picture book is based on Aaron Douglas, the African American painter, muralist, and graphic artist. Often hailed as the father of Black American art, and a key part of the Harlem Renaissance movement, the book follows Aaron from the age of four, when he discovers a love of stories and decides to create his own. Though frustrated by his struggle with reading (“the words are just squiggles, and try as he might, even with help Aaron can’t get it right”), Aaron discovers the magic of telling stories through images, and begins to conjure fabulous art - art that can “make a difference” and help him “discover what he wants to say.” What an engagingly-told tale, with David Roberts’ illustrations oozing style, charming detail and all the art-as-story-telling power that young Aaron is delighted to discover in the book.
December 2021 Book of the Month | Grandma is coming to visit so it’s all hands on deck! Dad posts instructions on the fridge, spelled out in those lovely bright magnetic letters: Bobby has to mop the floor, Dad is to scrub the dishes (this is a two dad family), Sarah needs to feed the fishes, and ‘I’ll bathe the cat’. It’s at this point, that the cat takes over – anything to avoid a bath – and, with a swish of its paw, rearranges the letters. As the family follow increasingly silly instructions, with very funny results, the chaotic scenes are illustrated by David Roberts in the brightest, most stylish oranges and pinks. Fortunately, by the time Grandma rings the bell, everything is somehow clean and tidy. For all the silliness, this is a joyful depiction of family life and will be an absolute delight to share with little children.

What a great little book and a wonderful way of explaining democracy and the intricacies of the voting system: Perfectly timed for the American Presidential Elections. What was so clever was Valdez’s ability to explain whilst still maintaining an interesting and fun children’s story. There were also other messages running through the story, such as loyalty to one’s friends and peer rivalry within a classroom. I also liked learning about Mexican cookery with the odd baking tip thrown in for good measure! Managing to explain the freedom of information, fake news and what a boycott is to such young children is quite a feat. I think her quote, ‘never a perfect candidate in an election. How could there be? People aren’t perfect’ was particularly poignant. I think my favourite message however was ‘read, question, think’ – a message for life for all of us. A clever informative book with some great illustrations by David Roberts.
July 2020 Book of the Month | They may be a family of hyenas, but if we were all like the Bolds the world would be a much better place. In case you don’t know, the Bolds live disguised as humans in Teddington. Their two children attend the local primary, and both parents work: Mr Bold writes cracker jokes, Mrs Bold designs extravagant hats. In this story, Mr Bold’s mother arrives from Africa for a visit, and struggles rather with her son’s new lifestyle choice. It looks like the family will be exposed, but the story takes a different turn, and once again the Bolds come to the aid of someone who needs their help. The story is deliciously bonkers, the illustrations just as witty and full of quirky detail, and the Bolds’ live-and-let-live philosophy is a breath of fresh air in our quarrelsome times. If you want everyone to go to sleep smiling and happy, make this your bedtime reading.
Architecture-loving Iggy Peck is one of the young band of Questioneers, along with Ada Twist, Sofia Valdez and Rosie Revere. They love nothing more than asking questions, working things out and solving mysteries, and there’s a great one here: Ada’s Great-Aunt Bernice has been left a beautiful Art Nouveau mansion, complete with ghost – can Iggy find the mansion’s hidden treasures, and what to do about the ghost? The story is lots of fun, and Iggy’s enthusiasm for buildings and knowledge too is a key part of the adventure. A lively, hugely enjoyable read that celebrates brains and partnership.
Longlisted for the UKLA Book Awards 2021 | Most people like good, but Sofia likes better. When her Abuelo (Grandad) hurts himself on a mountain of rubbish outside their local landfill site, she determines to take action and turn ‘Mount Trashmore’ into a park. It’s not easy, and she needs all her courage to enter City Hall and put her ideas to the grown-ups in charge. With the help of friends and neighbours, Sofia proves that everyone has the power to change their world. It’s another uplifting and positive story in the thoroughly excellent The Questioneers series, and go-getter Sofia is a wonderful role-model for us all. Credit to David Roberts for his typically stylish and action-packed illustrations too.
Bring the Bolds into your home for some festive fun and frolics! Julian Clary’s stories of the Bolds, a family of hyenas who live in Teddington disguised as humans, are full of fun, mischief and charm, and so is this Bolds-themed Christmas activity book. Packed with David Roberts’ fabulous illustrations it’s gorgeous to look at and the different activities featured are certain to keep everyone smiling too. Naturally the jokes are of a particularly high standard – Mr Bold’s job is to write cracker jokes after all – but there are some good riddles too as well as puzzles and, best of all, lots of chances to draw or write about the Bolds. Lots of fun and a perfect Christmas gift.

A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month February 2019 | The best-selling author of The Gruffalo deploys a story-telling device equally full of cunning in this witty story about the way a King is tricked into doing some work. The King demands his favourite meal – fish and chips. The Cook is frightened of all things he needs to do to cook fish and chips; he’s too frightened to fish because he might get his apron wet, or dig potatoes because he hates worms or to chop up the potatoes because he might cut himself with a very sharp knife. But is that just a ruse? Soon the King is cooking his very own fish and chips – and loving every moment of it! David Robert’s blustering King and wimpy Cook are a delight.

As ever he has some crazy plans up his sleeve most of which involve him being disgusting in more ways than can easily be imagined. This time Bertie dresses up as a vampire for his school’s book week. The Bolds, for those who don’t know, are a family of hyenas living disguised as humans in a quiet street in Teddington. They wear clothes and hats to cover their hyena features, so the neighbours have no idea what they really are, though they notice they laugh a lot, as will readers of these hugely entertaining stories. In this adventure the Bolds run into trouble. A couple of foxes are disturbing the human residents of Fairfield Street putting themselves in danger of being captured. But when the Bolds try to help the foxes they get a very rude response. The story is full of incident, packed with humour (including masses of very good jokes) and the Bolds continue to demonstrate that kindness, tolerance, and a good sense of humour are the elements for a happy life. Required reading.

Shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal 2019 | One of our 2018 Books of the Year | Of all the books about the campaign for women’s suffrage in this the centenary year of some women being given the vote, David Roberts’s is the most beautiful to look at. In full page illustrations, vignettes and individual portraits, he brings the movement alive, portraying vividly the women and men involved, as well as the drama, frustration and endurance, violence and cruelty that were all part of the struggle. And though he’s best known for his illustrations, the text is as every bit as powerful as the pictures, meticulously and graphically detailing the words and the deeds that finally brought about change, and the roles of the many different people who played a part. The story he tells is one of the most inspiring of our times, still relevant today, and this book is a brilliant way to discover it.

In a nutshell: ever fresh and funny, the adventures of an inveterate scamp It’s hard to believe this is the 30th Dirty Bertie story, it’s so fresh and full of energy. Bertie just can’t avoid trouble, and gets up to all sorts of mischief in the three self-contained stories in this collection, often intentionally. He proves the best worst mascot in the world for his local football club, inadvertently scoring a goal for them when he wanders onto the pitch in the Larry Lion costume (that he shouldn’t be wearing). Stuck on a summer camp that he describes as ‘school for swots’ he tries his hardest to be sent home in disgrace, while a surprise triumph in the inter-schools Robot Wars lands him in trouble with Miss Boot, the inspiration for the fierce ‘Bootosaurus’. There’s an indomitable enthusiasm and confidence about Bertie that children love and through him they can be thoroughly and thrillingly naughty. David Roberts’ quirky, stylish and distinctive illustrations are an absolute joy too. Children who admire Dirty Bertie will also like the Number 1 Boy Detective books by Barbara Mitchelhill. ~ Andrea Reece

Until one horrible no good day when a new ruler was born...Hilariously told from the over dramatic, reluctant big sister's perspective, Sally Lloyd-Jones' unique narrative voice is brought exquisitely, and hilariously, to life by award-winning illustrator David Roberts.
Creativity meets curiosity and critical thinking in Iggy Peck's Big Project Book for Amazing Architects, the new hands-on STEM project book from the #1 New York Times bestselling team behind Iggy Peck, Architect; Rosie Revere, Engineer; and Ada Twist, Scientist.
A special 10th Anniversary Edition of this modern classic. A mix up with eggs has a placid duckbill dinosaur being brought up by T-Rex’s – clearly this causes hilarious problems. With Julia Donaldson’s irresistible, rollicking rhyming text and David Roberts’ glorious illustration, this bold and brilliant picture book crackles with wit. Julia Donaldson says: If you’d like some hints on acting out the story at home or in a classroom, you could take a look at www.picturebookplays.co.uk, which is a website I created when I was the Children’s Laureate and which has lots of ideas for dramatising picture books. You can even see a video of a class performing Tyrannosaurus Drip.
There are wonderful new laughs as the Bolds, the hairiest family in Teddington, set off on holiday. The extended Bold family – that’s Mr and Mrs, the twins Bobby and Betty, Uncle Tony whom they rescued from a safari park and Miranda a monkey who was rescued too - are going camping in Cornwall. Simple enough except that the Bolds have a very BIG secret. Will they be able to keep everything they need hidden while they are away? Being the Bolds, things are bound to go wrong – and they do especially when Bobby is mistaken for a puppy and snatched by a notorious dognapper! David Roberts’s brilliant illustrations make the most of Julian Clary’s riotous story. ~ Julia Eccleshare
A spin-off from Andrea Beaty’s and David Roberts’s inspiring and ground-breaking Rosie Revere, Engineer this eye-catching activity book will get children themselves thinking and creating like real engineers. While it tells them exactly how to create contraptions such as a catapult and a solar oven, more importantly it explains how engineers think, and challenges readers to ask questions, test things and imagine how the world around them could be improved. Most crucial of all, it reveals that failure is nothing to be ashamed of but in fact – along with persistence – a crucial part of success. Creativity is essential to engineers, the book says, and there are lots of pages on which children can draw and note down ideas; fun and empowering. ~ Andrea Reece
Longlisted for the UKLA 2017 Book Award and Julia Eccleshare's Pick of the Month, February 2016 Feel brave enough to go on a huge adventure? If so, this is the book to guide you! Bearspotting can be a scary business and it is best to know as much as possible about the different bears you might see. In particular, there are brown bears and black bears. And both can be very, very dangerous. Each needs to be handled in a different way: with a black bear you must walk away backwards and very slowly; with a brown bear, you must just play dead! But what if you meet both at the same time? Wittily illustrated by David Roberts, this is a playful and engaging picture book. ~ Julia Eccleshare

David and Lynne Roberts transfer the story of Sleeping Beauty to the 1950s in this stylish book, and put a unique spin on the story. Their Sleeping Beauty is a girl called Annabel, who lives with her two aunts. A true child of the 50s, Annabel loves sci-fi and spends hours dreaming of the future. There’s something of Bette Davis in the witch, wonderfully malevolent in an emerald green dress tightly nipped in at the waist, and killer stilettos, a sharp contrast to Annabel’s plump smiling aunts. After her thousand-year sleep Annabel is woken by an equally lively young girl (no princes in this story) and they dash off to explore the future. Told with élan, modishly mid-century – the poisoned needle is a record player stylus – the story is as magical as it’s ever been. ~ Andrea Reece
The classic tale of romance and true love has been reimagined in the roaring twenties, the era of flapper girls and the Charleston with David Robert’s beautiful Art Deco illustrations throughout. Lynn Roberts spirited retelling of the classic story of Cinderella finding her Prince Charming despite the best efforts of her wicked Step Mother and ugly spirited step sisters combined with David’s illustrations will provide plenty of interest for readers young and old. The attention to detail to the Art Deco period is simply stunning and a delight for both its beauty and humour. A lovely book to share.
Set in the glamorous seventies, this lively retelling is bursting with colourful period detail as Rapunzel goes from being a tower-block prisoner to a free and groovy girl. Lynn Roberts had added some funky seventies attitude to the traditional tale of the girl with the long hair and alongside David Roberts' fabulous illustrations this really does create a fantastic reimagining of this classic tale. Great to share with young story lovers this is also a humorous nod to the 1970's and each page is filled with fab, fun loving pictures that will be enjoyed both by the young and old. Simply awesome.

Award-winning Sally Gardner has written a deliciously topsy-turvy story as Wings & Co, a rather special fairy detective agency, gets on the case. When Sir Walter Cross, a man of remarkably regular habits, does something totally remarkable and unusual, Wings & Co begin an investigation. When two further completely unexpected events occur, the agency concludes that magic must be involved. Charming and funny, this is an imaginative delight. David Roberts’s illustrations capture it perfectly.
One of our Books of the Year 2016 | March 2016 Book of the Month The Bolds are back, cause for celebration! Written by Julian Clary and illustrated with élan by the incomparable David Roberts, this is a book that will have children in stitches. For those that don’t know, the Bolds are a family of hyenas living happily in Teddington disguised as humans. Word of their lifestyle has spread through the animal world and in this episode, a series of unhappy creatures turn up at their door looking for help. These include a crocodile named Sheila, Roger a ram, two flighty ex-racehorses, and a poodle with dreams of singing super-stardom! Ever optimistic and warm-hearted, the Bolds welcome them in and start teaching their guests how to be human. It’s ludicrous, charming and very, very funny, with a subtle underlying message about live-and-let-living. As delightful as their first adventures, and that’s really saying something. ~ Andrea Reece

Shortlisted for the 2015 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal - Shortlisted for the 2015 CILIP Carnegie Medal Award-winning Sally Gardner tells a gripping, bloody and bold story drawing on the traditions of fairy stories of all kinds and especially Hans Christian Andersen’s The Tinder Box. Tinder tells how a young and romantic soldier finds true love by overcoming every kind of magic and trickery in the world through a mixture of bravery and cunning while also trying to hold fast to goodness and truth. Behind him and almost all he meets lie the horrors and the excitement of serving as a soldier; all of them long for a peaceful life they cannot resist the heady excitement of living with danger an urge that leads them all into violence with all the terrible attendant consequences. ~ Julia Eccleshare
The classic story of the prince and the pauper is given a crafty twist here when young Pignatious sneaks into the palace on the trail of buns and accidently finds himself in the prince’s bedchamber. He thinks it’s splendid and is particularly taken with the box of ‘dressing up clothes’. Kitted out in a lovely pair of blue knickerbockers and a slightly too big wig, pig is mistaken for prince and has a great time ordering everyone around. The error is discovered, but the real prince finds a way to make the situation work to his benefit and his imposter’s. Peter Bently’s rhyming text is a treat to read aloud, while David Roberts has a ball with the illustrations: pig, prince and courtiers look wonderful, and the double page showing the palace guard before and after Pignatious orders them to cartwheel is a joy. This will become a real favourite. ~ Andrea Reece
The classic story of Ratty, Toad and Badger – three friends who live on the riverbank – is full of adventure, excitement and wonderful characters. David Roberts’ illustrations bring a touch of sophistication to the familiar story and capture perfectly the outrageous Mr Toad’s great adventure behind the wheel of his car. **** Parents might also be interested in Wild Wood, Jan Needle's richly comic re-telling of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, a book which can be read as political satire but there's much more to enjoy. Though the wood is cold and unemployment bleak it only takes a sea rat with an accordion and a nip of Daisy Ferret's special brew to get the stoats and weasels partying. Wild Wood is as funny, as relevant and as pleasurable in 2014 as it was on first publication in 1981.
One of our Books of the Year 2015 - A Reader Review Panel Pick of the Year 2015 | Comedian, entertainer and ‘national trinket’ Julian Clary now turns out to be a talented children’s writer too. The Bolds, his first book for children, is a real treat – a funny story with a ludicrous but hugely enjoyable plotline, lots of jokes, some nail-biting moments and wonderful characters. The Bolds live happily in Teddington where Mrs Bold sells hats and Mr Bold writes the jokes for Christmas crackers, jobs for which they are perfectly suited. Hardly anyone knows they are actually hyenas! Their secret nearly comes out when they attract the attention of their grumpy next-door neighbour, but maybe he’s got things to hide too. David Roberts’ illustrations are a joy to behold and perfectly catch the stylishly dressed Bolds’ blithe, carefree happiness. A very special book. Books in The Bolds Series: 1. The Bolds 2. The Bolds in Trouble 3. The Bolds to the Rescue 4. The Bolds on Holiday 5. The Bolds' Christmas Cracker 6. The Bolds Go Wild 7. The Bolds Go Green

In a three-story house with a shop down below, lived the world's finest hat maker, Madame Chapeau. Like the Lady herself, all her hats were refined. Brilliantly singular. One of a kind. So begins Andrea Beaty's new rhyming picture book about a hat maker adored by her friends and neighbours. On her birthday, Madame Chapeau wears the perfect bonnet made by her late husband. But on the way to her birthday dinner, a crow snatches her hat and flies away with it, leaving Mme. Chapeau sans bonnet. As she chases the crow, everyone around her begins to follow her, offering their own hats for her to wear. None of them are quite right for Madame Chapeau, though, until one special little girl offers her a hat knitted with love and [her] best birthday wish.

Like Rosie's and Iggy's project books, Ada's will be empowering and kid-friendly, with tons of classroom and parent appeal. No kid's lab would be complete without it!

But something about this sailor puts Ethan on edge, and he becomes increasingly agitated for his father's return. Only when the storm blows itself out can Ethan relax - but not for long, for the new dawn opens the children's eyes to a truth more shocking, more distressing than anything they heard the night before.
