Fleur Hitchcock is one of those writers who absolutely gets what young readers want from a story, as evidenced in books such as Shrunk! or The Boy Who Flew. In Clifftoppers, she creates a series of thrilling outdoor adventures steeped in the kind of freedom and independence that the Famous Five enjoy, but gives it all a properly 21st century feel.
When cousins Aiden, Chloe, Ava and Josh go on holiday to their grandparent’s cottage they discover a world of wild beaches (and no curfews) and are quickly plunged into a proper adventure involving a kidnapped child, son a rich businessman. The villains are tough, but no match for our determined, smart and organised youngsters, who are ably assisted by Bella the dog too.
It’s hard to beat if you are after really enjoyable and satisfying escapist adventure and the rest of the books in the series deliver too.
