"This rambunctious retelling of puss in boots’ rags-to-riches journey is an entertaining joy."
Part of Ben Miller’s Fairytale Woods series, Diary of a Puss in Boots presents a fresh and funny take on the classic tale. Told from the point of view of Mittens, the puss-perspective voice is brilliant, with an amusing entitled tone that will immediately draw 7+-year-olds into a lively story that deftly deploys a diary-format device.
Mittens is a moggy with ambition. A cat who longs for cream, and dreams of realising his destiny to live in the grand palace that’s perched over Fairytale Woods: “A cat of my brains and breeding should be living in a place like that, not cooped up here in this tatty old mill, choking on flour dust, without so much as a SIP of milk to ease my parched throat”.
As his master “hasn’t a clue. The boy’s head is in the clouds”, it falls to Mittens to step up (while wearing his natty boots, of course). Throughout his quest, Mittens encounters familiar fairy-tale faces as he finds himself having to defeat an ogre ahead of charming the king and queen, all of which leads to a very sweet ending that’s sure to delight kids and adults alike.
Recommended for reading together at home, or in the classroom, Diary of a Puss in Boots, and the Fairytale Woods series as a whole, is perfect for newly-independent readers who love the glee that comes of playful mash-ups, with Elisa Paganelli’s illustrations further elevating the magic.
