Written and illustrated by film-maker and artist Ana Graça, Young Carers in Space is a stellar story from the Young Carers Illustrations Project stable. Centred on a young carer who finds the courage to stand tall and speak out, it’s a beautiful book about being brave, and listening to the youngest of young carers.

Young carer Honey lives with her mum and autistic big brother, Pip. As a result of helping Pip get ready in the mornings, Honey is often late for school, but can’t find the words to tell her teacher why: “She felt like she had no voice”. One night, Honey is visited by a fairy who invites her to hop aboard her spaceship to visit Planet Gigantica.

When Honey wonders why the kids on the planet are so big, she’s told that “Kids are always heard, so they got BIG bodies to go with their BIG voices!” Though she initially still feels small and struggles to make herself big and her voice loud, Honey comes to find the courage to realise that “Her voice is BIG. Her voice is brave. And her voice matters”.

Given that Natalie Cassidy’s reading of the book on CBeebies Bedtime Stories has attracted almost 2.7 million views on YouTube since being broadcast in May 2026, it’s fair to say Young Carers in Space strikes a powerful chord. Enhanced by an activity book that’s designed to support adults through having conversations with young carers (called “About Me”, the activity book comes with stickers), the broader project is a wonderful initiative, and this book is a beautiful child-centred, life-enhancing joy. Free copies are available to young carers and their families, and to anyone who supports young carers, through the contact section of this website: www.youngcarersillustrations.com
