The Night Slayer is the first in an action packed fantasy adventure series that introduces us to orphan Alex, who realises he isn’t human but Vela, a mystical being that can communicate telepathically with others, wield elemental forces and more. But the Vela are persecuted by the sinister Moloch, the Man with No Face, and he’s coming for Alex next.

Can he and his new found friends find Night Slayer, a powerful ancient sword that is the only hope of stopping Moloch from ruling the world? This is a great introduction to a new fantasy world with entertaining main characters. Alex feels like a reluctant hero right from the beginning, his sense of right and wrong putting him in the path of the orphanage bully almost against his will.

This grounded sense of Alex’s character will make him relatable to readers and also makes him a strong central pillar among his friends and travelling companions. Whizz seems to have a lot of space for character growth, being the genius of the group but constantly having to overcome his own fear, it will be interesting to see if he gets stronger in future books.

Lin’s additional powers of foresight are intriguing and readers will be keen to see how they come into play throughout the book and in future stories. I liked the strong friendships formed between the characters in this story and I think that this establishes a strong foundation for what future books may bring.

The series already has comparisons to the Percy Jackson stories and I can see why, The Night Slayer delivers a full fantasy world with a page-turning pace and plenty of action to keep readers hooked. With the dramatic final scenes, readers will be keen to know what happens next.
